Carshalton Lavender
In the early part of the twentieth century, lavender fields were a common sight in Carshalton, Wallington and Sutton, the area being known as the lavender capital of the World. Time and urbanisation reduced the lavender to just a few bushes in gardens. In the 1990’s this tradition was revived at the disused allotments in Stanley Road, Carshalton. Cuttings were taken from local gardens and carefully nurtured at the local prison. Once ready for planting local volunteers and day-release prisoners returned the fields to their former glory. The community harvest takes place in July in each attracting local residents, artists and gardeners.
Having been born in Carshalton and lived in Mitcham when I was young, I was intrigued to see the lavender field of which I had been previously aware. As you approach the field the perfume of lavender and hum of bees fills the air, a purple haze greets your eyes - a feast for all the senses. |
